COALA Workshop on “Alegality”

March 3, 2019 to March 4, 2019

The COALA DAO workshop will be held on Sunday 3 March 2019 (9:30 am – 18:30 pm) to Monday 4 March 2019 (9:30 am – 18:30 pm), at Le Square, 3 passage Saint-Pierre Amelot, 75011 Paris with a COALA welcome dinner on Sunday evening.

Building on the work of the DAO workshop last November, it will establish the roadmap for legal research that will be undertaken by COALA as part of its ‘Alegality’ project. These working groups will convene again in subsequent workshops in 2019, planned in collaboration with Cornell University (NY), European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and/or Michigan State University (Michigan). More information about COALA can be found on http://coala.global.

The ultimate objective is to address the challenges faced by traditional organizations, institutions and jurisdictions as they interact with decentralized networks and autonomous blockchain-based code, and articulate legal frameworks and mechanisms that will enable DAOs and blockchain-based systems to participate and interoperate with traditional systems and legacy rules in the physical space.

To do so, this workshop will focus our working  groups on the following issues:

  • Legal domains that intersect DAOs, i.e. areas of law should be prioritized for research and translation for upcoming launches of DAOs (legal formation, contract, property, liability, tax)
  • Supporting interactions between DAOs and the legal world: cf. property and contract law
    • Identifying the limitations of current forms of interactions with the legal world
    • Elaborating new mechanisms e.g., decentralized insurance, contract and property APIs
  • Legal Avatars: creating legal representatives, surrogates, delegates, and/or custodians for various functions of blockchain-based systems
  • Organizational structure: enforcement mechanisms and underlying ethics of code-based rules
  • InterDAO relationships: International public and private law and their application to the jurisdictional space between global, decentralized blockchain “jurisdictions”
